Fruit Beer

Lots of people have the impression that fruit beer is "girly beer." That it tastes like sugared up soda pop. Fact is, fruit beer has been made for centuries. While some beers are made for a specific market and in fact do taste like sugar water some fruit beer can be more complex than wine. Exploring these wonderful beers can be lots of fun. We've chosen some of our favorites for the show.

Beers on the show:
Marin Brewing Blueberry
Pyrimid Apricot
Leinenkugel Brewing
     Berry Weiss
     Honey Weiss
Coconut Porter Maui Brewing
New Glarus Wisconsin Belgian Red
New Glarus Raspberry Tart
McMenamins Ruby
21st Amendment Water Melon Wheat

Homework: try some fruit beers with your friends. report about what you like and don't like.

Hop Crisis

A "perfect storm" has caused the price of hops to ski rocket. Many things factor into to making this happen: bad crop yields, increased consumption in other countries, and hop farms going away. It doesn't help that just a few years ago hop prices were so low that there wasn't incentive to keep growing them when growing corn to be used for ethanol production commanded a higher price. The beer that we know and love may go away or may become more expensive to drink.

Imperial Irish Coffee Chocolate Milk Oatmeal Oyster Stout

Stout is a very old style of beer. It's been around since 1700's at least. The style has always been loved but it's not always been popular. The running joke is "want a knife and fork to go with your beer" is unfounded. Stout, while thick and creamy, is often lighter, smoother and more flavorful then some icky American lagers. There are many different recipes for Stout including: Irish, Imperial, Milk, Oatmeal, Chocolate, Coffee and Oyster. Some consider the Porter style to be a Stout as well as the Stout style grew out of Porter beer. Today most breweries consider the styles to be distinct.

Beers on the show:
Almost every kind of stout. See the class photo.

Organic is not a new thing. It's not a marketing buzz word. It turns out it's a really strict thing to use the word. It's regulated by governments that have set up rules about what a product can't have, must have and it can't cheat. It's a long road to get a product labeled as organic and once it's labeled this way it's inspected to make sure it actually really is what it's supposed to be.

Homework: Find an organic beer or other product and try it out.

I don't feel Absinthe

It's been a year since we first sat in front of a mic and started talking about beer. Instead of a big fun party with a band we decided to break out of format so we could drink Absinthe. Absinthe has not been available in the US or A legally since 1912 when it was banned by the Department of Agricuture. We try Absinthe from the St George Distillery in Alameda located about 3 miles from the Beer School studio. It got poured in traditional ways: French, Chec, Ice and Cowboy.

7/22/07

If you can boil water you can make your own beer. There are lots of different ways to get started. You can start with a Mr Beer kit for about $40 which will make about 2 gallons of beer. If you spend just a little bit more money you can get a kit that will make even better beer.

Brewing on the Cheap show mentioned is here:
http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/archive/dwnldarchive07-16-06.mp3

Homework:
Brew some beer! Get a Mr Beer kit which is a cheap way to try out brewing. Or invest a little more money in a Starter Kit from your local home brew shop. If you don't have a local store Beer, Beer and More Beer is a online resource.

7/15/07

When you're outside working you don't want a big hoppy over the top beer. Instead, you want something that is good, cold and refreshing. We taste and talk about what people consider to be the premiere beers in this category.

Washoes is a fun game that anyone can play. It's played with a easy to make board and three silver dollar sized washers. It's easy to make your own boards or if you aren't a wood working type they can be found on eBay for about $40.

Homework:
Invite your friends over for a tasting of ice cold lawn mower beers. At the same time enjoy the films: Heathers, Very Bad Things and Smokey and the Bandit.

Guests: Motor
Host: John Foster
Beer: Miller Lite, Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors, Coors Light, Rainiere Ale and Wittekreke.

Surviving a Beer Festival
7/08/07

Beer festivals are a fun way to learn about different beers. A fest can be a lot of fun but it takes some preparation on your part to get the most out of them. Before you show up do a quick internet search so you know the details of the event.

Be sure to drink water, eat food, wear sun screen and have a plan to get home.

You feel obligated to drink the beer that you don't like.
Don't follow the crowd.
Taste to remember.
Take notes about the beers you are drinking.
Get the shirt if it's cool.
Leave glassware behind.
Take lots of pictures.
Hi Gene.

Homework:
Find a festival and go to it.

Bonus home work!
Volunteer to help pour beer at your local festival.

Even more homework:
Throw your own beer festival in your back yard.

Thanks for listening!

Prohibition forced brewing back into the home enabled by parts made available from the local five and dime. While Motor and I are not officially home brewing, we've brewed before. We tackle the tough questions about getting starting in the craft of brewing.

Homework:
There is no official homework this week. But if you are so inclined you might consider brewing some beer. There are many beer kits but the Mr. Beer is the simplest, cheapest and comes with everything you need. Order one up and brew a batch. Or just download the step-by-step instructions and read about the process of this stove top compatible experiment.

6/9/07

It took activists 75 years to get alcohol products banned from consumer use. Starting after the civil war groups made their way from state to state. A decade after the turn of the century much of the nation was "dry" and it was only a matter of time before government was swayed to put the final nail in the coffin. But it wasn't just one of these forces at work. It took money, politics, religion, big business, public opinion and a world war to make this happen.

Homework:

4/01/07

We pair beer with a variety of different salads with a salad chef and the inventor of the toasted raisin.

Thanks for making Beer School #1 on iTunes!

Check out Merlin's homework at http://ifallthingswereequal.blogspot.com/

Tom is salad chef from Beaver, PA between the Ohio and Beaver rivers. Tom talks about his fried salad and the award he received from the governor for getting kids to eat salad.

Salad Salad - iceberg, croutons, bacos, and ranch doesn't go well big beers.

Taco salad from taco bell is 850 calories and bowl you can eat. Goes well with Modelo or Hamm's beer.

All meat salad was made from steak, ham, sausage, turkey, bacon and chicken.

RockStar Salad! Make a reduction using RockStar, sugar, lemons and pepper. Don't use the diet version. Add to pine nuts, salad shootered cucumber, and shredded carrots.

Salad that went with a stout has arugula, beets, and goat cheese.

Homework in two parts:
It's baseball season. Write us with the beer that you are drinking at the ball park.

Thanks!
21st Amendment, Tom (salad chef), Mike (raisin wrangler) and everyone that got us listed as the 1st beer show on iTunes.

Everybody knows your name.
3/25/07

We're talking about pubs. Fav's and rave's, never going back, the special, out of the way place, the past, the place to go to be invisible and how to make a new place your own.

Fav's start with Triple Rock and 21st Amendment. Connecticut Yankee has a secret pipeline to Anchor Steam. We need to hang out more at Washington Square Bar & Grill. Never going back to Blooms on Potrero Hill.

Infusion (now Nova) was the epicenter of the dot com. Buster's is the cheapest burger in all of San Francisco. O'Reilly's has Racer 5. We kinda like Jack's in new Giridelli Square near the Fisherman's Warf. John made Sulley's Grey Goose, Seattle, WA his own. His sister is known at the Lakota, Lexington Nebraska.

Marina Bars, ugggh. What is a Marina girl, what is a Marina guy. When visiting the Marina beware of cougars.

Maritime Brewery aka Jolly Roger Tap Room. Russian River is always worth the trip.

Triangle bar in Oregon is called Ringlers Annex. Take the ferry to Marin Brewing Company.

The power of City Search or Yelp will find awesome Mexican in LA or anywhere.

Goners: Bender's. St. James Infirmary, MVP (Mountain View Pub), InFusion (now Nova fun but just not the same as). 20 Tank.

Say hi to Brandon when visiting Thirsty Bear.

Toronado! The Ramp!

Homework in two parts:

1. send us 2 beer coasters from your local. if they don't have their own then send us a coaster for your favorite beer. address is in the show notes but hear it:
Beer School / John Foster, 401 Terry Francois, Suite 212, San Francisco, CA, 94158

2. Book report. Post a story, review or ramble about your bar. Even better, go to that bar order a beer, take notes, then write it up. Bonus points for writing about a Anchor.

Thanks!
