Hey motor, I’ve been looking for some Radeberger, its “on the computer” in a few beer stores here, but not in stock, but I’ve been getting a couple of different Kolsch’s and I’ve noticed that the they are just not that carbonated, they barely form a head. I pickup up some of the summer Curve Ball from Pyramid thinking that maybe the boat ride was affecting the German true Kolsch style, but that’s kind of flat too. I’ve got a couple bottles of Sam Adam’s Utopia’s and the Kolsch’s seem only slightly more carbonated. You’re the German bier guy, so is that normal, or is the 100 degree weather doing something in the shipment/storage here? I actually quite like the smoothness of the Kolsch, especially after working outside for a couple hours painting the house.
For anyone traveling to the Bahamas, another good summer beer is Kalik Gold. Kalik is the official beer of the Bahamas (brewed in Nassau), and is sometimes the only thing you can find, depending on where you are. It comes in Kalik (think Bud Light), Kalik Light (think Bud Light and water), and Kalik Gold (think a rather hoppy, 7% potency Budweiser). I personally can’t stand the light beers, so the added hops in Kalik Gold make it an interesting and light summer beer….as well as very potent.
I love trying the local beers when I travel, and this one does not disappoint.

Hey guys,
You mentioned the whole Shandy thing and it made me recall the version of this they drink in France called Panache (pah-nah-SHAY). It’s beer mixed with “limonade” which is pretty much like Sprite or 7-Up. They sell it in cans in the supermarkets.
FYI, Wikipedia has good article about Shandy and Radler and it even mentions the proper ratios of beer to soft drink.

My fiancee’s father drinks Coor + grapejuice. Its not bad. I’ll drink it again next time I visit him. Maybe he and I can covertly make that the signature drink at the wedding. He is paying.
The lemonade sounds good. I’m going to try it with some High Life, the unjustly maligned champagne of beers.
You have trader joe’s up there right? The ones down here in the southern california we have this San Jose Hopfest beer on the endcaps. Its like $4 for the 6 pack. Talk about that beer. I like it.
here is my homework:
insipred by “beer and salad” i ordered some “Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier” and “Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchweizen” (www.schlenkerla.de) and invited some friends.
it was 10 years ago that i first drank rauchbier. and the memory wasn’t very pleasant. didn’t like the taste. but i was surprised that my sense of taste evolved, and i now like the “smokey” taste of the rauchbier.
my friends liked it as well, but a common made remark was that will not become theire favourite beer 😉
i prefer the rauchweizen over the rauchbier (which is a maerzen) because the tail is more smoked and it is not as sweet as the rauchbier is.
i love your show!

I tried to recreate your test using beers displayed at Bev and More in Santa Clara. I substituted Anderson Valley “Summer Solstice Cerveza Crema” for the Sam Adams and added a Wittekerke Belgian Wheat Ale. I found the Anchor rather ordinary. My fav is the SN as its a bit more hoppy, although its the lighest colored of the beers.
The AV Sumer Solstice has that spicy note and it rather creamy, but not my favorite on a hot summer day.
BTW, When you go to Chico, the SN Rauch beer is my favorite. I only wish SN offered growlers to take home some 🙁
WRT to brewing your own beer – it’s not just for regions with a lack of microbrews. I decided to try my own brew after seeing the Sam Adams “longshot” competition. I learned more about beer by brewing my own and I made a particular type of beer that isn’t often found, even in microbrews. I plan to keep brewing and trying different styles each time. I’m also lucky to have a place like Fermentation in Campbell that stocks a lot of different ingredients, but there is also the web.
[admin: WRT means “with regards to” ]
I’ll have to try this. I currently have some Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy at home (http://www.leinenkugels.com/summer_shandy.html), but I suspect mixing in the lemonade into a beer rather than having that “built-in” flavor would taste better. I haven’t made up my mind just yet, but the Shandy is definitely less offensive than some of their other gimmicky flavored brews.
